CHAPTER 19: PROOF

“Please don’t shoot!” a woman’s voice hollered at Eric.

Confused, he tried to respond, his voice caught in his throat in a bubble. His finger trembled on the trigger. Tension pressed back; it was at the point right before there was no turning back. The girl raced at him, her legs pumping up and down, her hands fluttering over her head. “I’m not a rotter!” she pleaded, her voice wavering, sucking in deep gasps of air.

Eric backpedalled, his mind demanding more time to decide. His eyes studied the stranger. She acted alive, even if she blended in with the undead. The flare hovered high in the sky, its red glare illuminating the girl. Covered in grime, gore, and tattered clothes, she footed the bill of a corpse.

“Please, point that gun away from my face,” she called out again.

At the last moment, Eric’s finger slipped from the trigger, allowing the hammer to fall back as he lowered his arm. If she were a zombie, he would soon find out the hard way. “What the fuck are you?” He demanded answers from the speechless species, leveling the barrel at her head, speaking the universal language of lead.

“I’m just like you.” She reached out for his hand. “My blood is warm just like yours.”

Hesitantly, Eric took the hand, feeling the warmth in his own. “How is that possible?” A million questions coursed through his mind. First and foremost, he wanted to ask her how she walked amongst the dead unnoticed. Tired, his mind must be playing dirty tricks on him. “Where did you come from?”

“Down there.” She gestured towards the herd. “You shouldn’t be here.”

“From,” Eric glanced over her shoulder “down there?” The swarm was slithering up the hillside, a black mass coating everything like oil. “That’s not possible.”

“I don’t have time to explain.” She tried to push him away. “I can’t steer them away from your city. Especially since you fired that flare. I can try to delay them while you get your people out of there.”

Eric couldn’t believe a word she was saying. “You can walk amongst the dead?” he chuckled, approaching the point of hysteria.

“Just get out of here,” her voice faltered, “please. I don’t need those people down there to die.” Weary and tired, she didn’t look capable of taking another stride.

“They need to die.” Eric couldn’t risk her diverting the horde, even if he didn’t believe a single word she said. “It’s the only way the Republic of Newfoundland can survive.”

“What are you trying to say?”

“I’m saying I can’t let you stop them. Our plan is already set in motion. If those bikers survive, we can never defeat Pharmakon.” Eric noticed a spark ignite behind the girl’s eyes. “They stand in our way of the underground base.”

The girl snatched Eric’s collar, tugging him forward. “Tell me where it is,” she demanded.

Eric pushed her hands away. “Come with me. We have a little time.” The herd was upon them. An overpowering stench of death reached out for them ahead of the pack.
